Where do unwanted people go?

WITNESS, the latest project from Arlekin's Zero Gravity (zero-G) Virtual Theater Lab, is a new documentary theater piece about Jewish immigration in the face of antisemitism.  WITNESS brings actors and audience together from around the world for a shared immersive experience set on a boat in digital space.  The piece is inspired by the journey of the MS St. Louis, which left Hamburg in 1939 with over 900 Jewish people on board and headed to Cuba only to be turned away, leaving the passengers stranded with nowhere to go and no escape. WITNESS shares stories of Jewish immigrants from around the globe through an interactive virtual theater experience at the nexus of film, theater and video games.

THE ORCHARD
OFF BROADWAY | NY

An immersive hybrid production for in-person and virtual audiences
A new adaptation of The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov
Conceived & directed by Igor Golyak
Featuring Jessica Hecht as Ranevskaya

And what does it mean -- dying? Perhaps man has a hundred senses, and only the five we know are lost at death, while the other ninety-five remain alive.

- Trofimov, The Cherry Orchard

Enter Chekhov’s universe, either in-person or online, and explore a beautiful immersive environment and a strange, fragmented encounter with the characters of The Cherry Orchard. This Off-Broadway adaptation of the play will welcome live audiences as well as virtual participants from around the globe to experience the play, witness the prayers, confessions and dreams of the characters, and make choices that affect what happens next. In this deeply human telling, genres collide and no two performances are exactly the same.

PRESS HIGHLIGHTS

“Ingenious”

Elisabeth Vincentelli, NY Times Critic’s Pick ‘21

“We have been in an intense period of experimentation with virtual theater through the two productions we created during the pandemic (State vs Natasha Banina and chekhovOS /an experimental game/).  We were able to reach audiences in over 40 countries which was incredible.  WITNESS is the next step in our exploration, and for this show we are experimenting with a new combination of tools that may have not been used previously in the virtual theater medium.”
